Political Hockey

January 25th 2012 23:57
So this story is coming a few days late, but I really couldn't pass up the opportunity to comment and write about this story.

On January 23rd, 2012 the Boston Bruins were invited to join President Barack Obama at the White House. Everyone decided to show up, except for the Conn Smythe winner, and arguably the reason the Boston Bruins have those nice shiny rings.

Tim Thomas released a statement on Monday regarding him not being at the white house:

"I believe the Federal government has grown out of control, threatening the Rights, Liberties, and Property of the People. This is being done at the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial level. This is in direct opposition to the Constitution and the Founding Fathers vision for the Federal government. Because I believe this, today I exercised my right as a Free Citizen, and did not visit the White House. This was not about politics or party, as in my opinion both parties are responsible for the situation we are in as a country. This was about a choice I had to make as an INDIVIDUAL. This is the only public statement I will be making on this topic."

There's a couple things about this statement that really rubbed me the wrong way, but don't get me wrong I completely agree that as a Free Citizen you are allowed to do as you wish. HOWEVER, in his statement he goes on to say

"This was not about politics or party, as in my opinion both parties are responsible for the situation we are in as a country."

He is stating that basically regardless of who the President is he would not have gone to the White House. Also he he is stating that its not about Politics or Party, so why not go? Why make this huge deal about not going to the white house if your reasoning behind not going is NOT Political? It's clearly a political choice not to go to visit Barack Obama. In fact it is well known that Tim Thomas is a very educated person on Politics and he is Republican, or atleast Right Wing.

I'm sure the Boston Bruins were not very happy about his choice to snub the President of the United States, it makes them look bad lets be honest. It makes the NHL Look bad as well, however at the end of the day an employee of theirs stood up for himself, and if he didn't feel comfortable not going to the white house then by all means don't go.

In the end, I think Thomas did the right thing, however I don't think he should have put a statement out, I think he took the wrong road to deal with the situation. The Boston Bruins should have done a better job releasing an official statement on behalf of Tim.

What are your thoughts on Thomas not going to the white house?
