OVI-LESS

January 26th 2012 00:14
Ottawa is set for the 63rd Annual NHL All-Star Game on Sunday, However there are some major headlines regarding this game this year.

First thing is first, some major stars will not be competing in this years NHL All-Star Game, and many are due to some major injuries around the league. However one player has decided to opt out of the game completely stating he thinks he isn't worthy of being there.

I'm talking about Alexander the Great, Ovechkin has decided to opt out of this years game because he believes that his suspension makes him not worthy of playing. His official statement:

"My heart is not there. I [got] suspended, so why I have to go there?" Ovechkin said. "I love the game; it's great event. I'd love to be there, but I'm suspended. I don't want to be a target. I feel I'm not deserving to be there right now. If I suspended, I have to be suspended. That's why I give up my roster [spot]."

I cannot believe this mumbo jumbo hes implying here. It's a well known fact he doesn't want to participate in the damn game so he just made up some lame excuse involving his suspension that makes him feel better about backing out.

This isn't fair to the fans, especially the ones in Ottawa. I mean for the most part, I don't really care about the all-star game, and I don't think many NHL Fans do. However in 1998 the NHL All-Star game was hosted in my home town Vancouver, and I was lucky enough at 10 years old to go to the festivities and see the skills competition. As a 10 year old I was so excited to see the likes of Teemu Selanne, Wayne Gretzky, Peter Forsberg and home town hero Joe Sakic. As a kid I loved it, I'm sure back then the hardcore 30 year old hockey fan didn't really care about the game either, but my point is the people who live in the city where the game is taking place want the best players to come out. I even won a jersey from playing a N64 NHL Breakaway 98 Tournament, I remember it very well, it was a shoot-out tourny involving National teams (I picked Sweden).

My point is, Alex Ovechkin is regarded as one of the most talented players in the NHL, and just because hes having an off season or in his words "Not worthy of being there" doesn't mean he should back out of it. Prior NHL players who have opted out of the NHL All-star game have been suspended for missing it. It should be no different here, Ovi's 3 game suspension should turn into a 4 game suspension and he should get a fine as well.

Do you honestly think the Canucks want to send 4 players to Ottawa for the weekend? Probably not, considering they play on Tuesday against their arch rivals the Chicago Blackhawks. No the Canucks would rather have their 4 all-stars sitting at home resting up before there matchup on Tuesday.

Political Hockey

January 25th 2012 23:57
So this story is coming a few days late, but I really couldn't pass up the opportunity to comment and write about this story.

On January 23rd, 2012 the Boston Bruins were invited to join President Barack Obama at the White House. Everyone decided to show up, except for the Conn Smythe winner, and arguably the reason the Boston Bruins have those nice shiny rings.

Tim Thomas released a statement on Monday regarding him not being at the white house:

"I believe the Federal government has grown out of control, threatening the Rights, Liberties, and Property of the People. This is being done at the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial level. This is in direct opposition to the Constitution and the Founding Fathers vision for the Federal government. Because I believe this, today I exercised my right as a Free Citizen, and did not visit the White House. This was not about politics or party, as in my opinion both parties are responsible for the situation we are in as a country. This was about a choice I had to make as an INDIVIDUAL. This is the only public statement I will be making on this topic."

There's a couple things about this statement that really rubbed me the wrong way, but don't get me wrong I completely agree that as a Free Citizen you are allowed to do as you wish. HOWEVER, in his statement he goes on to say

"This was not about politics or party, as in my opinion both parties are responsible for the situation we are in as a country."

He is stating that basically regardless of who the President is he would not have gone to the White House. Also he he is stating that its not about Politics or Party, so why not go? Why make this huge deal about not going to the white house if your reasoning behind not going is NOT Political? It's clearly a political choice not to go to visit Barack Obama. In fact it is well known that Tim Thomas is a very educated person on Politics and he is Republican, or atleast Right Wing.

I'm sure the Boston Bruins were not very happy about his choice to snub the President of the United States, it makes them look bad lets be honest. It makes the NHL Look bad as well, however at the end of the day an employee of theirs stood up for himself, and if he didn't feel comfortable not going to the white house then by all means don't go.

In the end, I think Thomas did the right thing, however I don't think he should have put a statement out, I think he took the wrong road to deal with the situation. The Boston Bruins should have done a better job releasing an official statement on behalf of Tim.

What are your thoughts on Thomas not going to the white house?

BRUINS, LEAFS

November 30th 2011 20:32
So I predicted a Pens win last night, and that was not the case, however Crosby had another multi point night. I move to 1-1-0 on the season thus far.

TONIGHT We Preview an Original 6 Matchup

Hockey Battle #006

-------------PREVIEW--------- --

Boston Bruins ( 14-7-1 ) @ Toronto Maple Leafs ( 14-8-2 )
Location: Toronto, ONT, Air Canada Centre

Last 10 Games:

Boston Bruins 9-0-1
Toronto Maple Leafs 5-4-1

Season Series: The season series has not even been close thus far, and that is hard to say just through 2 games. However the Leafs have been outscored 13-2 in the 2 games they've played against the Bruins. The Toronto Maple Leafs are coming off of a 3-0-1 road trip, while the Bruins have been 11-0-1 in the month of November, it has definitely been a November to Remember for the Boston club.

The Story: The biggest story here, is a win and the Maple Leafs will stay atop of the North East Division. However the Bruins have 2 games in hand on Toronto and only trail by a single point. Much has been said about the way the Bruins have played in the month of November, and it truly has been remarkable. The Maple Leafs are going to have to come in with a game plan and execute it to the fullest extent tonight in order to win.

Who's on Fire: Zdeno Chara has 16 points in his last 16 games, including 4 Goals. Joffrey Lupul has a 6 game point streak currently, and has acquired 10 points in that span. However the player to watch tonight will be Tyler Seguin, he has absolutely dominated the Leafs thus far, through 2 games he has 4 goals and added 2 assists.

Injury Report: Toronto is expecting to have Grabovski back in the line up tonight, however they are still without James Reimer ( Head ), Colby Armstrong ( Ankle ), Mike Komisarek ( Broken Arm ) and Matthew Lombardi ( Shoulder ).

The Prediction: I'm expecting a strong showing from the Maple Leafs, however I still believe their goaltending without James Reimer is one of the weakest in the league. Expect Boston to throw pucks at the net from every angle. Boston wins this one 4-2, Seguin has another multi point night against the Leafs.

CROSBY'S BACK

November 22nd 2011 04:10
It was an electric night at the Consol Energy Center tonight, as Sidney Crosby made his long awaited return. The Consol Energy Center errupted as Sidney Crosby was announced in the starting lineup for the Pens'.

It couldn't have been a greater night for his return from his 10 month recovery. Crosby scored 5 minutes into the first period to make it 1-0. The arena blew up, as did the the Penguins bench. Crosby came up through the neutral zone with speed, took the puck wide and roofed it on his backhand. It was like he hadn't missed a beat

BRUINS, RANGERS, HAWKS

November 17th 2011 23:31
HockeyBattle Official #001

The New York Rangers are officially the hottest team in the NHL rattling off 7 wins in a row, and are 8-1-1 in their last 10 games. Impressive to think they are doing all of this without arguably one of their best shut down defensemen Marc Staal. The one time NHL All-star, selected #12 overall in the 2005 NHL entry draft has been suffering from post-concussion symptoms much like Sidney Crosby

LIGHTNING STRATEGIES

November 15th 2011 20:12
The recent meeting between the Philadelphia Flyers and the Tamp Bay Lightning had some very contorversial situations between the two clubs on the ice. It wasn't involving fighting, or hits to the head but it was to do with the Lightnings 1-3-1 defensive strategies.

BRUINS HAMMER SABRES

November 14th 2011 20:58
Milan Lucic of the Boston Bruins is no stranger to the physical aspect of the game. During Saturday night the Bruins hosted the Buffalo Sabres in a north east divisional game. The Boston Bruins came out a little slow, giving up a first period marker to the Sabres, Thomas Vanek potted his 11th goal of the season giving the Sabres a 1-0 lead going into the first intermission.
